Greybairns are the spirits of perished children that have been touched by the Plane of Shadow, and therefore remain there in death. They may have wandered through a shadow crossing in an abandoned tower during the full moon and gotten permanently lost, or they may have been lured to their deaths on the Material Plane by foul spirits native to the Plane of Shadow. Though they are spirits, Greybairns appear corporeal, with grey skin and eyes of deep, swirling black pools. Greybairns carry no inherent evil in their hearts and they have no wish to inflict suffering upon the living — at least not intentionally. They are, however, afflicted with a terrible loneliness that propels them to seek comfort in the presence of the living. Because of their innocent nature, greybairns can be easily manipulated by evil forces who promise them belonging in exchange for their service. 

It is said that a greybairn can be laid permanently to rest if a living creature engages it in a genuine act of caring love. Inviting it to share a meal, gifting it a thoughtful toy, or engaging it in play are all supposed methods. In practicality, few can overcome their fear of the spirits in order to demonstrate an act of authentic genuinity.

A greybairn doesn’t require air, food, drink, or sleep.
